Low Impact Development

While simple in concept, Low Impact Development is an approach with hundreds of design decisions. In brief, the approach is basic: reduce man’s footprint on the land.

  • Work with the land’s natural topography to place roads, dwellings and parks.
  • Group neighborhood homes together and offset that density with large parcels of undeveloped woods.
  • Use nature’s stormwater handling techniques–natural grass-lined swales–to collect and convey stormwater rather than the typical curb and gutter.
  • Curve roads to slow traffic and angle intersections reduce glare into houses.

The Ramble demonstrates that sustainable practices make sense, even in the geographic core of Asheville’s metropolitan area.
